A free event is being held in Everett July 12 to assist people who help run a charity or nonprofit organization, or those serving or considering service on a related board.

The Office of Secretary of State’s Corporations and Charities Division is holding the Charities and Nonprofit Education Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Comcast Arena’s Edward D. Hansen Conference Center (2900 Hewitt Ave.) in Everett.
The event’s morning session will focus on nonprofit board governance, including liabilities and indemnification, employment issues, duties and bylaws and liability insurance.

The afternoon session topics include:

• Washington state tax requirements;
• Registration and renewal requirements for Washington charities and nonprofits;
• State regulations for bingo events, raffles and adult beverages; and
• A panel Q & A session on governance and taxes.

“We want to be sure that every charity and nonprofit organization, regardless of its size, has access to the knowledge it needs in order to be successful and stay in compliance with state registration and reporting requirements,” said Teresa Glidden, charity and nonprofit education coordinator for the Corporations and Charities Division. “We also want board members to be aware of their fiduciary duties to the organization they are serving.”

Presenters include representatives from the Office of Secretary of State, state Department of Revenue, Washington Liquor Control Board, Washington State Gambling Commission and Washington Attorneys Assisting Community Organizations (WAACO).

Registration is limited and available online at http://www.sos.wa.gov/charities/TrainingSignup.aspx .  For more info about the Everett event, contact Glidden at (360) 725-0373 or teresa.glidden@sos.wa.gov.

The division will hold similar events in Vancouver Sept. 16 and in Kennewick Sept. 20.
