US 2 near Index reduced to one lane for 19 days

INDEX – Two winters ago, a giant concrete panel slid off a truck and crashed into the railing of the Anderson Creek Bridge on US 2 near Index. Emergency repairs were made in the wake of the crash – but now it’s time for a permanent fix.
Starting at 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will close one lane of the bridge around the clock for up to 19 days to make permanent repairs to the bridge railing and repave a portion of the bridge deck. The lane is expected to reopen by noon Friday, Sept. 30.
“There’s never an ideal time to close down a lane on US 2,” said WSDOT Project Engineer Dave Crisman. “Working in September gives us the good weather we need to do the work, but allows us to miss the heaviest summer traffic and still wrap up construction before drivers head out to local fall and winter events.”
During the 19-day closure, a temporary traffic signal will automatically direct drivers across the bridge one direction at a time. Flaggers will be on hand during peak weekend travel hours to limit traffic backups. Drivers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes during weekday construction and 20 minutes during weekends.
The bridge was damaged Dec. 27, 2009, when a semi lost control and the 56,000-pound concrete panel it was hauling crashed onto the bridge railing. Crews completed emergency repairs Jan. 7, 2010. The current project will permanently repair the railing and bring the bridge up to federal standards so it can continue to serve the 6,400 drivers who depend on it daily.
