The public is invited to help develop the next statewide rail plan at two public workshops in Spokane and Seattle next week. Public input will help shape the future of the state’s rail system.

The state rail plan is a component of Washington’s statewide multi-modal transportation plan. It will guide the Washington State Department of Transportation toward strategic rail partnerships and establish priorities for making efficient, cost-effective investments that support communities, the economy and the environment. With development assistance from consultant Cambridge Systematics, the new plan will meet federal and state requirements and propose five- and 20-year strategies to improve the rail system. WSDOT will release the final plan by the end of 2013.

“The state rail plan will serve as a strategic blueprint for future public investment in the state's freight and passenger rail network,” said WSDOT State Rail and Marine Director John Sibold. “We hope to see a lot of people participate and share their views.”

The goal of the workshops is to help WSDOT define the State Rail Plan vision statement, goals and objectives.
