At a ceremony held this morning in downtown Olympia, Snohomish County Sheriff Deputy Dan Scott was honored as the 2012 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs (WACOPS).

Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen presented the award, “As far as I’m concerned our law enforcement officers are all heroes by the very nature of their work,” said Lt. Gov. Brad Owen.

“Every day these brave men and women put on their uniform and confront situations that may turn hostile or even violent at any time.  They are both our communities’ first line of defense and our first point of resolution.  We are extremely fortunate to have such an incredible corps of public servants willing to protect and serve.”

The purpose of the award is to provide recognition of clearly exceptional and outstanding performance of duties above and beyond the normal scope of the profession. Deputy Scott was chosen because of the bravery and heroism he exhibited in a September 25, 2012 incident in the city of Stanwood.

Thanks to his keen awareness Scott was able to identify the signs of a bank robbery in progress. His quick thinking and precise actions allowed him to neutralize the suspect while protecting innocent by-standers in the middle of a crowded grocery store parking lot.

“The manner in which Deputy Scott acted brings honor and distinction not only to himself but to his department and the professional as well”, stated WACOPS President Craig Bulkley. “We are proud to honor him as the recipient of our Law Enforcement Officer of the Year award.”
