Obama doing a good job

Dear Editor,

There are extremists in every area of this country.  They aren’t the peaceniks, civil rights activists, or the anti-war protestors of decades past, these days they are the conservatives, the far right wing, libertarians and tea party activists that make up the republican party.  They have embraced the lies and fear mongering of Fox News and conservative talk radio.

It’s an epidemic of hatred that has spawned violence, slogans like “let’s take back our country” are obviously racist.  Tea party patrons may be well educated, but they are clearly misinformed.

Is it possible to avoid the infection of hate?  Absolutely.  Stop listening to Limbaugh, Savage, Palin, Beck, Hannity, Bachmann and the others who are creating the atmosphere of hate and are profiting from it.
Republicans are sore losers.  They have no intention of cooperating with President Obama.  They are against reform, regulations, accountability, and are against the American people.
They are obstructing the progress and restoration of this great nation.

Yet in spite of their successful ‘fear and smear’ campaign progress is being made, and President Obama is doing a good job.  We need to let our elected officials do the job they were hired to do, whether or not we agree with them.

There are some who write to this paper repeatedly complaining of taxes, spending, the stimulus, etc., yet are clearly unaware of the truth.  Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

In the mid-term elections let’s replace weak, ineffective democrats with stronger, more effective progressive democrats.  Not republicans.  They had over a decade of control and blew it.  Let’s keep moving forward.
Access credible news sources, and get informed.  It’s the common sense thing to do, the patriotic thing to do.

Community pulls together to helped family in need

Dear Editor,

We would like to thank the many people who have shown us such wonderful support after the loss of our house on North Lakeshore Drive in a fire on Friday, April 9.
Friends and neighbors rallied around us, and we have been blessed by their care and concern from the beginning.
Even as the firefighters were there, a neighbor got us some storage bins for some pictures and a few other items that were saved. Another neighbor gave us shoes and coats. Friends and neighbors prayed with us, and many of them offered a place to stay.
Businesses have offered us free meals, and groups that we are a part of have given us household items and offered other help.
The community in Lake Stevens has been our home for over 20 years, and it has been so heartening to us to feel so supported.
We are renting a house in Lake Stevens while the assessment and rebuilding process takes place, and plan to make our home in Lake Stevens for a good many years to come.

Thanks to those who supported Community breakfast

Dear Editor,

For those of you who were brave enough to follow the hot pink arrows to Cavelero Mid-High School on Saturday morning, April 24 to participate in “A Caring Community Pancake Breakfast” thank you.
We were able to raise some much-needed funds to help out with emergent needs at the Lake Stevens Family Center. Many of you said, “Keep the change” when you paid for breakfast, and for that we are very grateful, as well.
Thanks to Andrea and Gary at Albertson’s, Permagas, Lake Stevens Lions, Lake Stevens and Granite Falls Rotary, Lake Stevens Kiwanis, Tonya Christoffersen, Mel and Mary Coonrod, Rick and Tammy McAllister, Scott W, Steedman, DDS, L. Stephen and Judy Brooks, Stephanie and Ed Haynes, George Wood, American Legion Post 181, Jack and Roxie Sahlbom, Diva 911, Surf Shack Espresso, Lake Stevens Chevron, Edward Jones, Mimi’s Mochas, and Gary and Karen Wolf.
Of course, my thanks to the Lake Stevens Journal for helping to promote this event as well. I apologize if I left your name out.

Keep your lawn green the natural way
Dear Editor,

My lawn has green grass, green weeds and green moss.
All this green occurs without chemical fertilizer, pesticides or herbicides.
Looking at a “perfect” lawn makes me worry, and seeing one that is more natural is a calming experience.
Please do what is good for our environment—please don’t poison our lake this summer.

Taxes on the rise, new blood needed in Olympia

Dear Editor,

The U.S. income tax rate is sitting around 32 percent and after next year, when the Bush tax cuts expire, our rate could climb as high as 39-40 percent.
The Congress is considering a VAT (Value Added Tax), basically a federal sales tax, which could add up to 10 percent more over a year.
You can throw in Social Security and the federal load is around 55-60 percent of income going to taxes.
I mention this due to inept state legislature that has added to our local tax burden with even more taxes during this last session. Many of the democrats in charge, in particular Sen. Brown (Senate Majority Leader) has pushed a state income tax.
If I do my math correctly, carry the one, we could be looking at 70-75 percent tax load on our citizens.
The last I checked Rep. Hans Dunshee has been in lock-step with Sen. Brown on taxes. When will the spending like a drunken-sailor-in-port end? Speaking as a sailor who has gone drinking in port, it is expensive.
The democratic leadership has done nothing to reign in spending and truly change the way they do business, it is time for a change.
November is just around the corner and it is the season for some new blood in Olympia.
