in place until 2014

End-of-course exams will replace math WASL as
graduation requirement in 2014 BY CHUCK TUCK | JOURNAL REPORTER The math graduation requirements for students through the Class of 2012 have remained unchanged.
The Class of 2013 will have an additional option to choose end-of-course math exams. Beginning in 2014, the existing WASL will be phased out and math end-of-course exams will be required for graduation.
The specific requirements for students in current and future classes are as follows:
Math graduation requirements for the Class of 2008:
Students in the Class of 2008 who have not yet passed the high school Washington Assessment for Student Learning (WASL) for math can still graduate this June if they:
Earn one credit of math this year, their senior year, and take (not necessarily pass) the high school math WASL this April or earn one credit of math this year, their senior year, and submit a score of 19 or higher on the math ACT, 47 or higher on the math PSAT, 470 or higher on the math SAT, or three or higher on calculus and statistics Advanced Placement course exams.
Seniors who do not successfully complete one of the above options for math can fulfill math requirements for earning their diploma later this summer by:
Submitting a “Collection of Evidence” — a sample of classroom work showing specific subject skills and knowledge, (registration deadline is May 2, submittal deadline is June 16) or taking and passing the high school math WASL this August.
Yearly math WASL tests continue to be given to students in grades three through eight.
Students in the Classes of 2009 through 2013 will fulfill their math graduation requirement by:
Passing the high school math WASL or earning two or more math credits during their 11th and 12th grade years and taking (not necessarily passing) the high school math WASL each year or earning two or more math credits during their 11th and
12th grade years and passing a state-approved math alternative.
Yearly math WASL tests continue to be given to students in grades three through eight.
Class of 2013 additional options for meeting math graduation requirements are:
Passing end-of-course exams in Algebra I and Geometry or passing end-of-course exams in Integrated Math I and II.
The high school math WASL will be eliminated as a graduation requirement or option for students on schedule to graduate in 2014, although a math WASL will still be given annually for students in grades three through eight.
