Lake Stevens Marine honored with
statewide flag-lowering
“Governor Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington State agency facilities be lowered to half-staff Wednesday, April 9, in memory of U.S. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Dustin Lee Canham of Lake Stevens,” a
statement from the Governor’s office said. “Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset Wednesday or first thing Thursday morning, April 10.” Canham’s father, Mark Canham, said that Dustin would always do what he asked him to do. He would give anyone who needed it, his last dollar.
Dustin was the best man at his friend, Charlie Powell’s wedding.
“He was my best man but he had so many friends, a lot of them considered Dustin their best friend,” Powell said. “He was someone you could always turn to.”

Many government facilities honored Canham by lowering their flags including Lake Stevens Fire District.
“From our standpoint, acknowledging his sacrifice was a small thing to do,” David Lingenfelter, Deputy Chief said. “Him being a hometown boy was meaningful to us. The sacrifice of all of our soldiers is important for us to remember.”
The American Legion Post 181 will be remembering Canham with a flag-lowering ceremony at the Lake Stevens War Memorial in downtown Lake Stevens on Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m.
All are welcome to attend.
