BY PAM STEVENS | EDITOR Every community relies on the volunteers who provide countless hours of service to its citizens through the many organizations and personal efforts put forth, often by those who are not looking for recognition.

Shawn Osborne, a Lake Stevens High School graduate, is one of those great men.

Osborne played football, basketball and was a member of the wrestling team while he attended Lake Stevens High School and has taken those experiences to become an honored and award winning coach.
On Friday, May 23, Osborne was given the 2007-2008 Junior NBA/WNBA Coach of the Year Award for his work as a coach for the Snohomish Boys & Girls Club.

“Shawn is a dedicated coach who puts fun and development above competition and who places the emotional and physical well-being of players ahead of a personal desire to win,” Jim Garcia, Athletic Director for the Snohomish Boys & Girls Club said. “Shawn is an inspiring role model who cares about his players, an enthusiastic team leader and a beacon of fair play and sportsmanship.”

Osborne is one of 32 coaches selected from over 83,000 coaches from the United States, Canada and abroad.

Charlie Cobb, Athletic Administrator of Snohomish County Boys & Girls Club and Washington State Hall of Fame Coach along with Denise McGuire, Unit Director of Snohomish Boys & Girls Club, presented the award to Osborne at a surprise ceremony at the Snohomish Boys & Girls Club where over 100 friends and family members joined in the celebration.

Osborne has coached basketball for over 10 years and has worked as a volunteer firefighter for 17 years. He also served on the Snohomish City Council for four years.

“He has taken the different positive experiences from sports to pass on to his players,” Garcia said. “He treats each player as an individual. He is committed to continued education of the sport he coaches. He coaches from two to three basketball teams in the winter and spring season. It is unbelievable the self-sacrifices he makes to give back to the sport he loves with the hope that he might enhance one of his players abilities and quality of life. Shawn has made a difference in many lives he has touched.”
