Aquafest brings throngs of people

Sunshine, drizzle and pouring rain – the crowds keep coming BY PAM STEVENS | EDITOR Check out more Aquafest 2008 photos here! Each year during the last weekend of July, Lake Stevens starts buzzing with excitement as trucks full of carnival rides come to town and tents and canopies start popping up all over Main Street. There is no doubt that our annual Aquafest Festival is here.

This year was no different. The crowds swarmed Lake Stevens to enjoy the festivities and savor the flavors of all of the many food choices Aquafest had to offer.

The Grand Parade, sponsored by the Lake Stevens Journal, started out with drizzles of rain but ended up with bright, shining skies and mobs of people lining the streets.

The Children’s Parade, hosted kids from many organizations including pre-school groups, Girls Scouts, Cub Scouts, Church groups and friends and family getting together to share in the fun of walking in a parade. Candy and treats flew through the streets as kids drove by on bicycles, scooters, wagons and a host of other devices.

The teens in town got to enjoy heart-stopping rides, carnival games, a teen dance, hosted by the Boys & Girls Club and a myriad of sporting events, which took place over the course of the weekend.

Athletes of all types had more to choose from than you could count with marathons, basketball, soccer, disc golf, waterskiing and wakeboarding and even a $50 boat race for the engineering enthusiasts.

Although the rain came down at a startling pace on Sunday, many still gathered at the Family Fun Fest with diapered babies dashing, kid’s stuffing their faces with pizza and many games and crafts to keep their minds off of the rain.

The culminating event was the beautiful fireworks show, which took place right after the Boat Parade on Saturday night.

The clear sky and pristine lake were the perfect venue for the extravaganza of lights, which lit the night sky in flashes of color. The crowd oohed and aahed at the brilliant showcase overhead.
