Don Silcox, long-time L.S. resident dies at age 77

BY PAM STEVENS | EDITOR Donald William “Don” Silcox , long-time Lake Stevens resident and community activist passed away on March 25. He was 77 years old.

Silcox participated in many volunteer positions throughout his life and enjoyed working with citizens of Lake Stevens to make the community a better place to live. 

Silcox ran for the Lake Stevens School District’s Board in Nov. 1971 and was on the Board until Dec. 1979.

He also served as a volunteer firefighter starting in 1949.

“He continued as a volunteer with the department until 1982 when he was appointed as full time, paid Fire Chief,” Dave Lingenfelter, Lake Stevens Fire District’s Deputy Chief said.

Silcox served on the Lake Stevens Historical Society’s Board of Directors and was one of the city’s first Councilmembers.

He was also a member of the American Legion Post 181 until the time of his death.

“I have known Don all of his life, his mother worked for me for 40 years at the pharmacy,” life-long friend Jim Mitchell said. “He was active in the Historical Society and was one of the original volunteers along with me.”
Silcox attended Lake Stevens schools and his family was always involved in the community. He and his mother worked on the Community Development Study Program through the University of Washington, a program that was instrumental in coming up with the idea of the Sewer District and the School District within Lake Stevens.

“They were liked by all,” Mitchell said. “I always thought of him as my little brother.”

Silcox was also active in his church and was the President of his Church Council for many years. 

A celebration of his life will be held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, 2111 117th Avenue NE in Lake Stevens at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 19.

American Legion Post 181 also honored Silcox with a flag lowering service at the Lake Stevens War Memorial last Saturday, April 11.

Silcox is survived by his wife Annetta to whom he was married for 53 years. He also had two sons Jeff and Greg, a daughter Sheri and six grandchildren.
