On Sunday, April 11 at approximately 5:30 a.m., Granite Falls resident Modesto Cruz Mejia, 25, was arrested for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Joanna Marsh, 22, in their home.
Snohomish County deputies responded to a 911 call in the 23200 block of 134th St. NE in unincorporated Granite Falls.
Mejia lives there with his girlfriend, their children and other relatives. “The man (Mejia) told detectives there had been a party at the house on Saturday night and that both he and his girlfriend drank a considerable amount of alcohol and were drunk,” Snohomish County Sheriffs Office spokesperson Rebecca Hover said in a statement. “He said that early Sunday morning they were in their bedroom together and were intimate.”
He also told investigators that he picked up a gun he and Marsh had allegedly used during foreplay and accidentally shot her.
“He was adamant the shooting was an accident,” Hover said. During all of this their two young children were in the room asleep on a different bed. The children were not harmed.
There have been three previous domestic violence incidents between the couple in 2007 and 2009. Hover said. Mejia was ordered held in the Snohomish County jail in lieu of $500,000 bail on Tuesday, April 13. Everett District Court Judge Tam Bui found probable cause to hold Mejia for investigation of first-degree manslaughter and for the unlawful possession of a firearm.
