The west end of 20th Street SE, west of Cavalero Road, has a section of roadway pavement that has been in poor condition for the past several years.
The County, and now the City as of 2010, has had to perform regular pavement patching nearly on a weekly basis. The problem has been that the surface pavement is separating from the base pavement which is resulting in potholes developing nearly as fast as repairs can be performed.
Under the County, a permanent repair was held off since the plan had been to perform the reconstruction of 20th Street SE between US 2 and 91st Avenue SE in 2011 including this section of roadway. However, due to the funding shortfall by the County, the road improvement project was put on hold.
While the long range plan is still to perform the road widening improvements in this area, the City has decided that an interim repair of this distressed section of roadway is necessary as soon as practical.
At the March 28 City Council meeting, it was voted unanimously in support of awarding a contract to Lakeside Industries to perform a pavement repair of this section of roadway. It is anticipated that the entire project could take up to five days to complete.
The project start date is dependent on weather for both temperature and an extended dry period.
It is hoped that this will occur in late April or May.
Due to the narrow section of roadway, providing a travel lane during the construction will be difficult and sometimes not possible. Signs will be posted in advance with estimated times for construction.
Motorists will be advised of alternate routes during the construction period or to expect long delays along 20th Street SE.
“Although there will be some inconvenience during this repair, it is absolutely the right thing to do for our citizens,” Mayor Vern Little said.
Recognizing that this roadway is a major route for daily commuters, the City and the Contractor will work to do their best to minimize the disruption to the public.
