Winning the ‘Art in the Alley’ award was a welcomed surprise to Anna Bostwick, local photographer and owner of Anna Bostwick Photography.

“Winning first prize was thrilling,” she said. “I have entered contests before and even won but the rules have always been very clearly written out. This contest was simply “Art in the Alley” which really opened the door to creativity for me.”
Bostwick hoped the judges would see her vision of ‘Art in the Alley’ and was pleasantly surprised when she was awarded first place for her entry “Art in Motion.”

“Not knowing if the judges would see my vision of Art in the Alley, there is always worry. There is a certain validation that comes with your idea coming to fruition and being rewarded as the best of the best,” Bostwick said. “It was 38 degrees the day we shot and my model, ballerina Kristen Hoffman, danced like a dream through the alleys of Mount Vernon for me for over an hour.  The juxtaposition of youthful beauty in a city alley was so stimulating to capture through the lens.”
‘Art in the Alley’ is an annual juried photography show that is sponsored by the Mount Vernon Downtown Association every spring.

Bostwick’s enthusiasm for photography started when she was a child.  She remembered watching the Super Bowl with her parents when a cameraman panned the sky to show a photographer hanging out of a helicopter to get just the shot he wanted. She was hooked at the age of nine.

Bostwick’s first camera was her dad’s old Yashica 35mm manual camera and today her equipment has grown and takes up the better part of the living room.

Bostwick is well known for her wedding photography and also specializes in family photos and high school senior portraits.
