In the morning hours of Friday, June 24, a driver hit a sinkhole while they were heading west on Highway 204 near 81st Street NE.

The hole started as a small manhole cover size but grew as the day went on reaching almost five feet in length and three feet wide.

As crews from the City of Lake Stevens, Washington Department of Transportation and Lake Stevens Sewer District inspected the hole they discovered that underneath was a space measuring approximately two feet deep.
It looks to have been caused by sand settling around a future but inactive sewer line.

The whole was filled with ground water, not sewer leakage or other hazardous material or waste.
Traffic was closed to one lane heading west but was moving steadily as the afternoon progressed.
