Life jacket cabinets around the county will open Memorial Day weekend to kickoff the start to the season.
Two of the county’s lifejacket loaner cabinets are located in Lake Stevens, one at Wyatt Park on the west side of the lake and the other at City Boat Launch in downtown Lake Stevens.
The life jacket cabinets are maintained by Safe Kids Snohomish County, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Stevens Fire.
The cabinets, opened at dawn and closed at dusk, allow swimmers and boaters to borrow life jackets, free of charge.
Boaters are reminded that they must meet the legal requirement of one life jacket per occupant. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind while enjoying the water this summer:
• Never swim alone • Inflatable water wings and tubes are not safety devices • Life jackets are not babysitters; keep children within reach at all times • Life jacket size and weight must be correct for the person wearing it and it must be a snug fit
• All life jacket zippers and straps must be fastened.
