Over the holiday break the Lake Stevens wrestling team traveled to the Clash National High School Wrestling Duals in Rochester MN, one of the most prestigious dual-meet tournaments in the country.
Lake Stevens went 3-3 to place 20th out of 32 schools in the tournament, which included eleven of the top thirty teams in the country and fifteen schools ranked top two in their state.
Lake Stevens lost their first match 42-33 to Collins Hill, the top-ranked 6A team in Georgia. This loss put Lake Stevens in the consolation bracket, where the best they could place was 17th.
Lake Stevens finished out the first day by defeating Kimball Area, Minn., 51-16, followed by a 56-13 victory over Port Washington, Wis.
Five Lake Stevens wrestlers went undefeated on the first day of competition: Jake Douglas (120/126 pounds), Eric Soler (138/145), Logan Johnson (170), Cody Vigoren (182), and Brandon Johnson (heavyweight).
In the first match of the second day, Lake Stevens defeated Green Valley, Nev, 34-33. Lake Stevens trailed by two points going into the last match between Lake Stevens’ Eric Soler, defending Wash. state champion, and Green Valley’s Zack Perry, a defending Nev. state champion. Soler trailed 1-0 late in the third round, but scored a takedown with seconds to go to win the match 2-1 and secure the victory for the team, 34-33.
Soler finished 6-0 in the tournament, as did heavyweight Brandon Johnson. Both wrestlers are ranked number one for all Washington classes in their respective weights.
On January 3 Lake Stevens continued its Wesco dual-meet winning streak by defeating Arlington 68-9. Lake Stevens next travels to the Central Kitsap Matman tournament on January 12.
