On July 20, North Cascades Crew of Lake Stevens, one of thirty-one clubs from as far away as Colorado, competed in the Cascadia Masters Championship Regatta. Also known as the B.C. Championship, the event was held at the Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion in B.C. Canada.
Shaving 20 seconds off her practice time, Kat Runyon of Lake Stevens, made the final and finished fifth in the Women’s D-E lightweight 1x division.
Jenn Huffman, of Snohomish, won first place in the Women’s C 1x division after achieving her fastest time yet of 3:50 in the preliminary heats. Ben McIssac, from Arlington, qualified for finals in the Men’s D+ lightweight 1x division. He was third across the line but finished fifth with the handicap.
The following day July 21 those rowers along with recreational, masters and friends of North Cascades Crew volunteered to provide safety for the swimming portion of the Lake Stevens Ironman.
The 1200 swimmers were accompanied by the capable lifeguards on paddleboards and NCC folks in kayaks, canoes and row boats. The race ended with the flotilla of watercraft escorting and cheering on the last four swimmers to the finish line.
