On December 2, 1982, Dr. Barney Clark underwent a 7 and a half hour operation to replace his dying heart with an artificial one designed by Dr. Robert Jarvik.
The operation was successful. We have made great strides since 1952 when the first artificial heart valve was placed in a human being and from 1967 when the first human heart transplant was done.
This came about because some people have trouble with their old hearts. The same holds true for all of us when it comes to our relationship with God.
The problem is that our “old” heart is against God and for us to be in a right relationship with Him we need a “new” one. We cry with David in Psalm 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
We pray for the change that God promised Israel in Ezekiel 36:26, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” Only in Christ can we become new. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Dr. Jarvik had the answer for Barney Clark. Jesus Christ has the answer for you and me as He changes our hearts through faith so we can learn the lessons of life from the true Giver of life.
