Lake Stevens wins Tournament of Champions

Over the holidays the Lake Stevens wrestling team traveled to Lakewood, Cali. to compete in the 21st annual North Torrance Tournament of Champions held on Dec. 29 and 30.

The Vikings wrestled against 86 of the top teams from southern California as well as two teams from Arizona and a team from Georgia during the two days of competition.

Team captains junior Eric Soler wrestling at 126 lbs. and senior Kinsey Johnson at 138 lbs. dominated the competition both going undefeated with Soler recording three falls and three tech falls without surrendering a single point in route to winning the 126 lb. championship and being named the tournament Outstanding Wrestler.

Johnson was equally impressive scoring five straight falls to make the finals where he won the 138 lb. championship with an 8-6 decision over Amir Hassan of Westlake, Cali.
Juniors Jesse Peterson (120 lbs.) and Shaquille Reed (220 lbs.) finished the tournament in third place, seniors Dakoda Reynolds (113 lbs.), Mic Majors (132 lbs.) and Austin Gershmel (145 lbs.) placed fourth with senior Ryan Olliges in seventh place.

With eight wrestlers placing in the top seven the Vikings distanced themselves from the competition to win the Team Championship trophy.

In addition, Vikings assistant coach Andy Knutson received the tournament’s outstanding coaches award.

Remaining  season schedule: Thursday, Jan. 12 vs. Arlington 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. at LSHS • Thursday, Jan. 19 at Monroe 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. • Thursday, Jan. 26 vs. Marysville Pilchuck 5:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. at LSHS.
