The Lake Stevens High School wrestling team placed fourth at the prestigious Tri-State Tournament, held at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene Dec. 14 and 15.

The Vikings scored 154 points, trailing Hermiston (222), Kuna (205) and Mead (169.5).
Senior Brandon Johnson led the Vikings, taking first place at 285 pounds and pinning every opponent he faced. Johnson is the number-one ranked heavyweight all-class in Washington and placed second at state last season.
Freshman Michael Soler placed third at 106 pounds, winning his way through the consolation bracket after a loss in the quarterfinals.

Also placing for the Vikings were Shaquille Reed in fifth place at 220 pounds, Jesse Petersen in sixth at 132 pounds, and Cody Vigoren in eighth at 182 pounds.

Tri-State is regarded as the Northwest’s most prestigious high-school wrestling tournament, attracting top wrestlers from all divisions in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho.

Each weight class often includes several state champions and runner-ups. Winners of the tournament are given an automatic seed in the national tournament.

Hermiston, Oregon, won the tournament with four champions, including an all-Hermiston final at 120 pounds. Out of Washington teams, Lake Stevens finished second to Mead.
