The last time the Lake Stevens wrestling team faced the team from Roseburg High School in Oregon, the Vikings won by the narrowest of margins—a 33-33 tie that the Vikings won by tiebreaker criteria. This year, it wasn’t even close, as the Vikings rolled to a 48-14 victory.
The Vikings traveled to Roseburg on Friday, Dec. 21, for a match between the number-one ranked wrestling team in Washington, and Roseburg, the defending Oregon 6A state champions. The match started at 182 pounds, and the Vikings rattled off eight victories in a row to take a 37-0 lead and secure the victory.
A number of Roseburg’s varsity wrestlers were out with injuries, making the victory easier for the Vikings. In the matches between ranked wrestlers, however, the Vikings came out on top. At 145 pounds, Lake Stevens’ defending state champion Eric Soler defeated Cameron Mesa, ranked seventh at his weight in Oregon. At 120 pounds, Lake Stevens sophomore Alex Rodorigo defeated Roseburg’s Toby Dill, ranked sixth at his weight in Oregon.
The dual meet was the third annual competition between Lake Stevens and Roseburg, powerhouse wrestling programs in their respective states. Lake Stevens is now 2-1 in the series, losing the first match at Roseburg before winning the next two years.
The Vikings are now 7-0 in dual meets, a record that now includes victories over number-one ranked schools in Washington (Tahoma) and Oregon (Roseburg). That undefeated record will be tested on Dec. 28 when Lake Stevens travels to The Clash, a dual-meet tournament between the nation’s best high-school wrestling teams.
