On a beautiful September morning in the Pacific Northwest, 208 swimmers gathered in the dark to swim in Lake Washington for the second annual Swim Across America, Seattle event. Friends and family watched as swimmers collected at Luther Burbank Park on Mercer Island. With everyone’s help the benefit raised over $170,000.
As an Age Group 2 swimmer Sydnie Chesley, of Lake Stevens participated in her first open water swim completing a mile in Lake Washington for Swim Across America (to benefit Seattle Cancer Care Alliance).
Chesley, age 11, swam on the ninth anniversary of Sept. 11 and was randomly given the race number 343 which was the number of fire fighters lost on 9/11. She was one the youngest swimmers to compete in the mile and finished seventh place overall, first in her age group (11-18) with a time of 19:27.
